Morrison Horticultural Demonstration Center
Denver, CO
The Denver Botanic Gardens embarked on a project to build the Morrison Center to teach horticulture to individuals with disabilities. Ron Abo led the programming, supervised the design, and was the architect of record for the Denver Botanic Gardens Morrison Horticultural Center. The facility was designed and built to demonstrate horticulture as a means of physical and occupational therapy for persons with physical disabilities. The Center consisted of a greenhouse and a large classroom/multi-use space. The greenhouse was designed to provide solar heating and evaporative cooling to the space. Large air ducts at the apex of the south-facing greenhouse funneled super-heated air through a honeycombed slab to heat the floor. In the summer, the large ducts in the greenhouse exhausted the air during the evening and evaporative coolers conditioned the space during the day. Manually adjustable sun screens also aided in conditioning the space.
