The abo co-op designed the renovation of two floors of undergraduate teaching laboratories in the Ekeley Sciences Middle Wing. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at CU Boulder is a national leader in its field and makes critical contributions to the teaching, research, and service missions of the University. This project focuses on correcting deficiencies on the first two floors of the middle wing of Ekeley Sciences and is one part of a comprehensive plan to redevelop this wing.

One of the challenges to the design was incorporating additional fume hoods to provide adequate ventilation in the laboratories while keeping the integrity of the architecture. The solution was to conceal exhaust ducts and mechanical equipment in architectural towers that reflect the Italian Renaissance style of architecture of the original historic building.
